This differs from its previous strategy of primarily relying on third-party models to support AI functions in the Chinese market.

Sources familiar with the matter say the AI model was developed in collaboration with Alibaba and trained with Alibaba's support. This is the first time news has surfaced about Apple training a dedicated AI model for China. Previously, Apple preferred to rely on models provided by local Chinese partners to introduce generative AI features to iPhones and other devices sold in China.

Neither Apple nor Alibaba responded to requests for comment from the media. Sources familiar with the matter said that Apple's AI toolkit, Apple Intelligence, is expected to launch in China in the coming months following an iOS operating system update.
