Verge is a renamed privacy-focused cryptocurrency, formerly known as "Dogecoin Dark."

Demand for anonymous cryptocurrencies grew steadily in 2013 and 2014 as cryptocurrency enthusiasts quickly realized that on-chain Bitcoin payments were not as private as most investors initially were. To remedy this problem, Dogecoin Dark was created in September 2014 with the dual goal of maximum anonymity and true decentralization. Nearly two years after launching Dogecoin Dark, the team renamed the Verge with the same privacy and decentralization goals.

Verge uses a variety of technologies to achieve its goal of an extremely private cryptocurrency. The Wraith protocol provides Verge investors with a toggle switch in the Verge core wallet that allows users to choose whether to conduct fully private transactions via invisible addresses. When conducting bitcoin transactions or transactions with Menlo coin-style privacy levels, there is an option to initiate on-chain transactions with standard privacy levels. Tor is a message encryption privacy tool that Verge integrates into its wallet by default to ensure the privacy of peer-to-peer messaging. I2P tunnels provide a high degree of redundancy for information requests and transmissions across networks. When a network participant wants to contact another node for the first time, I2P routes a communication request through a custom distributed hash table (DHT) that finds existing tunnels similar to other users. Verge also supports atomic exchange, which supports their decentralized goal by allowing cross-chain value transfer (or exchange) between chains that all support atomic cross-chain transactions without a trusted third party monitoring and mediating the exchange. Verge supports this by implementing BIP65 check Lock Time Validation (CLTV).

Verge tokens (XVGS) serve as a private store of value and medium of exchange.

Verge differs from other tokens in the variety of mining algorithms it supports. Verge supports five different proof-of-work algorithms on one blockchain (i.e. Scrypt, X17, Lyra2rev2, MyR-Groestl, and Blake2s) to prevent over-centralization of local assets on their own chain and to protect the transfer of various native digital assets, private, cross-chain, or offline.

Verge's total XVG token supply is capped at 16.5 billion. New tokens can be minted using any of the five algorithms supported by Verge. The average block confirmation time is 30 seconds. According to the intermittent schedule determined by the Verge core team, the block award was halved.

Verge uses the Pow consensus to get blocks for participating in mining.

The previous anonymous coins were used to conduct anonymous transactions through zero-knowledge proof or mixed coins, while Verge conducted anonymous transactions by confusing IP addresses
