SKALE proposes a decentralized, configurable two-tier on-demand side chain network that provides storage capabilities and supports high-throughput, low-cost, and low-latency transactions. In these nodes, the SKALE encryption protocol deploys a containerized child node architecture. The size of these virtual child nodes is dynamic, which is beneficial to network elasticity. SKALE child nodes also participate in consensus, run the Ethereum virtual Machine (EVM), and facilitate interchain communication.

SKALE networks use a so-called elastic capacity mechanism to virtually subdivide network nodes. Virtualizing child nodes allows each SKALE node to run multiple side chains simultaneously. When a user wants to create an elastic side chain, the SKALE manager accesses the SKALE smart contract ecosystem from the Ethereum main network. It works by allowing the user to choose the size of their chain, consensus protocols, virtual machines, parent blockchains, and other security measures. To help users determine their budget and resource requirements, the SKALE manager will automatically assign 16 virtualized child nodes to each child node using 1/128 (small), 1/16 (medium), or 1/1 (large) of each core node's resources. Users can modify these Settings to suit their needs. Once the configuration is accepted, users pay the SKALE manager for the duration of time they wish to rent the network resources needed to maintain their elastic side chains. After the SKALE Manager processes the request, it creates the elastic side chains and returns their respective endpoints to the user. If network resources are insufficient at the time of the request, cancel and notify the user.
