Trend funds have made a record short position in global bonds; the US CPI report is expected to be key to their profits and losses.
According to a Bloomberg report on August 12, data from UBS shows that commodity trading advisors (CTAs) who aim to profit from price movements across various assets tripled their underweight bond positions in July compared to two weeks prior.
These bets have remained stable since then, but if the upcoming release of the U.S. Consumer and Producer Price Index (CPPI) stimulates a rise in Treasury prices, these CTA trades will face the risk of losses.
According to strategist Nicolas Le Roux, before the inflation data is released, a 1 basis point change in the 10-year Treasury yield results in a profit or loss of approximately $300 million for CTAs, the largest exposure since UBS began compiling such data in 1990.
