US House Speaker: Congress Will Not Lead the Way in Putting the Brakes on AI
According to Beating AI News, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that Congress will not be the first to put the brakes on AI development. He believes that if companies like OpenAI and Anthropic truly feel that continuing research is too risky, they can stop on their own without waiting for a government order. Congress should not rush into issuing an emergency suspension order now.
Johnson acknowledged that AI needs safety barriers and was willing to recall lawmakers to vote once a mature solution was available. However, he also emphasized that the US cannot allow regulation to restrict itself. He preferred that Trump, Congress, and several leading AI companies sit down and clarify the rules first.

Albuquerque passes law banning cryptocurrency ATMs and over-the-counter trading services.
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed Virtual Currency Ordinance O-26-49 on September 10, prohibiting the operation, custody, or facilitation of cryptocurrency ATMs and over-the-counter cryptocurrency trading services within the city limits. City Council Member Stephanie W. Telles stated that approximately 90% of such transactions in the area are related to fraud. The ordinance requires relevant operators to remove all affected equipment within 45 days of its effective date, and individuals and entities violating the rules will face cumulative fines. City Council Member Tammy Fiebelkorn stated that the ban aims to remove physical infrastructure that facilitates fraudulent activities.
