The liquidation amounted to approximately $13.209 million, with a weighted liquidation price of approximately $86.61, making it the largest single liquidation recorded across the entire network today.

The whale did manage to cut its losses beforehand, but its retreat couldn't keep up with the rising oil prices.

Before the margin call, the address actually held approximately 179,300 short positions in BrentOIL, with an average entry price of approximately $80.58. As Brent crude oil continued to rise, it initiated a "limit-down" TWAP cover order in the early morning, originally planning to proactively close 44,000 short positions.

However, before the forced liquidation occurred, TWAP only managed to execute 26,800 contracts, worth approximately $2.315 million, equivalent to only actively withdrawing about 15% of the original positions and stopping losses of about $154,000. The remaining 85% of the short positions, totaling 152,500 contracts, had not yet been exited when Brent crude oil rose to around $86.61 and was forcibly liquidated by the system in one go.

Based on its combined cost of $80.58, Brent crude oil had already risen by approximately 7.5% above the average entry price when liquidation was triggered. This round of proactive stop-loss and subsequent forced liquidation resulted in a combined loss of approximately $1.073 million for the address.

This liquidation is not the first time the address has suffered similar losses in crude oil. On August 4th, its short positions in BRENTOIL and CL were forcibly liquidated, resulting in a total liquidation of approximately $3.823 million and a loss of approximately $116,000. Including this transaction and other trades during the period, the address has accumulated a net loss of approximately $1.162 million in crude oil contracts since August.

This market meltdown stemmed from renewed uncertainty surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran insisted that the US meet conditions, including war reparations, before resuming navigation, a demand Trump rejected. The market re-priced in the risk of supply disruptions, causing Brent crude to rise approximately 5% to $87.72.
