Currently, about 70% of Canada's exports go to the United States, indicating a high degree of economic interdependence between the two countries. The latest round of 50% tariffs affects approximately $20 billion of Canadian exports to the US, representing about 5.5% of Canada's total exports to the US, and covers goods such as hockey sticks and cement. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada will retaliate with "equivalent tariffs" to protect its businesses and jobs.

The market is focused on Trump's previous refusal to renew the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) exemptions, which has put the trade agreement into its annual review phase. Analysts believe that the US's removal of some trade protections could create the risk of further expanding tariffs.

Faced with trade pressures, the Carney government is promoting economic diversification. In recent years, Canada has strengthened its economic and trade cooperation with China, India, Saudi Arabia, and European countries, and has promoted the expansion of exports to non-US markets. Data shows that in 2025, Canada's exports to non-US markets grew by 11%, reaching as high as 33%, the highest level in more than 40 years.
