Project Introduction

Origin is an open source platform that can be used to create decentralized peer-to-peer marketplaces, initially targeting the global sharing economy, allowing buyers and sellers of goods and services for some uses (shared cars, service-based tasks, shared homes, etc.) to trade on a decentralized, open network. By using the Ethereum blockchain and interplanetary File System (IPFS), the Origin platform and its community participants can be decentralized without the need for traditional intermediaries to create and order services and goods.

Project Vision

Achieve true peer-to-peer commerce. Buyers and sellers can trade directly without intermediaries.

Market Demand

The development of the Internet is pushing the change of the traditional market. People begin to match buyers and sellers of goods and services online, and the transaction efficiency is greatly improved. Under this trend, numerous Internet marketplaces in the B2C and B2B categories have flourished, giving birth to many famous large companies. In recent years, the sharing economy market has been successfully verified. Sharing marketplaces like Airbnb and Uber allow people to better "sell" some of their assets -- the use of their homes, their time, their skills -- for financial gain. However, the existing sharing market has many shortcomings, such as unfair value capture, isolation of data by private companies, stifle potential innovation and arbitrary rule changes and censorship, and a decentralized market built on blockchain can fit this market well and solve the problems.

Solution

Origin plans to build a large commercial network that: From large companies like Airbnb, Craigslist, Postmates, etc.) transfer direct financial value (listing, transaction and service fees) to individual buyers and sellers transfer indirect financial and strategic value (customers and transaction data) of the company to the entire ecosystem to create new financial value for market participants that contribute to the growth of the network (e.g., building new technology for the Origin platform, Vertical market lead new product and introduce new users and new business) built on open, decentralized, and sharing the data layer, in order to improve transparency and collaboration Allow buyers and sellers from all over the world without hard currency exchange or duties under the condition of doing business Do not allow the centralized company or government impose arbitrary and often hard on how to develop the business rules, To promote the personal freedom of Origin platform to achieve these goals and create, it reckons that block chain technology and through the incentive in the standard, share data based on a large number of vertical cases (for example, short-term vacation rental, free software engineering, hire tutoring), and other technical personnel, businesses and consumers involved in the establishment of the ecological, contribution, and extension.

Project Implementation Mechanism

The Origin protocol contains open source standards for many market features, including user identity, publish lists, and peer-to-peer transactions; An open shared data layer that includes users, lists, and other data in market contracts. According to the Origin protocol, user and transaction data is stored on the Ethereum blockchain and IPFS. This means that third parties can query the Ethereum public blockchain and IPFS networks to obtain lists currently available, histories of previous transactions, and reputations of buyers and sellers of various ecosystems. Origin thinks this will do some good. First, the data corpus is open and immutable, which means it can be trusted without a "trust tax" imposed by traditional third-party intermediaries. Second, it balances the playing field and allows new teams of developers, entrepreneurs, and organizations to compete against each other based on shared data, ultimately creating greater value for the platform. However, we also see some of these difficult problems. Although in communication, we have learned that Origin attaches importance to user privacy, and users can choose how much personal data they disclose, it is difficult to have a standardized answer whether the data sharing at the data layer will involve user privacy -- the purchase records of different goods of the same user, the purchase records of different people for the same product. Different periods of the same purchase record may involve different levels of privacy concerns. In this case, this may raise some data privacy issues due to the immutable nature of the data. Origin Developer Infrastructure On top of the Origin protocol, Origin hopes to build an ecosystem of developers to produce many successful third-party DApps. While blockchain and distributed technologies are still new and challenging to most developers, Origin intends to release easy-to-use developer libraries to simplify the development process for third parties. By implementing an easy-to-use abstraction layer, attract more developers who are experienced in traditional Web and mobile technologies but may not be familiar with Solidity programming. The first library will be the Javascript GraphQL library that Web developers can use in their Web applications; Future libraries may include mobile libraries for popular mobile operating systems such as iOS and Android. In addition, Origin has released a decentralized and open source Origin online store creation tool, a platform tool that is fully hosted by IPFS and uses the ENS domain, enabling market operators to launch marketplaces with little or no programming. Users can search for products, add products to their shopping cart, check out, and pay with ETH, ERC-20 token or credit card. This layer is the foundation of the Origin enabling DApp. Origin's flagship DApp is a consumer market product that allows buyers and sellers on the Web to conduct business. At present the product can be in web side (shoporigin.com) and mobile terminal (originprotocol.com/mobile). Origin DApp is available to users who have the Origin mobile app or Ethereum Wallet, as well as web3-enabled browsers such as Coinbase Wallet, imToken, Trust Wallet or Metamask. On Origin's current flagship DApp, sellers can create listings, set up the availability of their products and accept payment. Buyers can browse and search a complete index of all goods and services offered on the Origin Marketplace DApp to make purchases. In addition to the flagship DApps that are currently online, there are many more vertical-specific dapps in development. Origin DApp plays a lightweight client role on the Origin platform. Front-end code can even be hosted and distributed on an open IPFS network. Origin does not want the Origin DApp to be the only way to access user and transaction data. Origin's code, protocols and specifications are currently open source, allowing others to extend and copy the code to create their own front-end experiences. The Origin DApp can be seen as a way to interact with the Origin protocol and data on the blockchain. Origin expects that after version 1.0 of its protocol is released, much of the development of the Origin platform will come from third-party developers using the open data layer.

Token Usage Scenarios

The OGN primitive token is a multi-purpose ERC-20 token designed to advance the development of the primitive network. OGN supports membership/advertising platforms, incentivise end users to use and share the platform, and transfer value as payment tokens between buyers and sellers. In addition, OGN is used for on-chain governance.

Incentive Mechanism

1.Origin Rewards buyers and sellers receive OGN incentives on their transactions. Origin -Commissions is a new advertising and promotion model that differs from the traditional paid marketing (CPC and CPM) models. Origin Commissions coordinates the interests of sellers, DApp creators and other branches to promote goods to buyers on the Origin network. With Origin Commissions, sellers can use OGN to promote their merchandise information to gain greater visibility when searching and browsing results on their Dapps and partner applications. The seller pays with the OGN token only after a successful sale. Similarly, promoters (DApp creators, bloggers, other affiliates, etc.) receive payment only when the actual transaction occurs.

Competitors

OpenBazaar focuses on the use of bitcoin and uses PC software to decentralize the marketplace for goods; District 0X addresses a similar project in the sharing economy for blockchain technology. The difference between Origin's business model and theirs lies in the intermediate protocol layer, which is more oriented to operation than technology and philosophy. Therefore, Origin's direct competitors are closer to traditional Internet companies

Points

Origin Protocol uses blockchain and distributed systems to create a platform that can replicate third-party middlemen. Through smart contracts, middlemen can be removed to ensure that both buyers and sellers can maximize their interests. Decentralized services are not controlled by any central entity, user information is stored safely, commodity and service information is open and transparent, and decentralization also avoids some obstacles of mandatory policies or regulations; The ideology and business model of the sharing economy itself are highly integrated with the concept of blockchain and decentralization. However, limited by technology and market environment, the sharing economy itself has too many links below the chain, leading to challenges in the actual implementation of the decentralization model. The disclosed materials do not mention more data related to platform governance, and more general functions needed by the sharing economy need to be supplemented.

Project Risk

1. Currently, there are too few online product categories and they are too scattered. In order to attract customers, both buyers and sellers need a lot of research and experiments. 2. The model design is too simple, mainly relying on third-party sellers to enter, while many parts of the chain are not clear about the rules of reward and punishment.

Values

The sharing economy is a large market area and Origin is committed to reducing intermediary costs, improving market efficiency and returning the power to manage the market to market participants. The construction of Origin is meaningful, it can provide more economic and infrastructure support for merchants; Origin's current architecture is more suitable for products/services that do not require much value-added management services and have relatively high channel costs, such as standardized virtual products (game items, etc.). At present, Origin has chosen to develop the sharing economy market, which does not fully fit the ideal market. In terms of technology and products, Origin needs to bridge the gap between the limitations of blockchain infrastructure performance and a good user experience; In terms of market, although Origin has an advantage over the traditional giants in cost through disintermediation, the traditional giants have accumulated great network effect, and Origin faces great challenges in expanding the market. In terms of data privacy, Origin's data sharing layer needs to be cautious about the data it shares, otherwise it may cause data privacy problems. In terms of regulatory compliance, Although Origin emphasizes value propositions such as anti-censorship and decentralization, when it develops to a certain extent, the regulatory problems that happen to AirBNB may not happen to Origin, and how to face regulation is also an important topic for Origin. Everything depends on the follow-up development of the project.
