One of my working definitions of liberty is "being under rules chosen by your own kind" Deliberately using "your own kind" with its vague meaning; fights for freedom within a country are often organized precisely around the idea that the people governing some issue don't understand or respect the ones being governed. (one motivating example here is the 00s copyright wars, where a common theme was that old stodgy politicians were trying to impose pre-internet norms and values onto an internet and emerging cyberspace tribe whose fundamental logic they did not appreciate and respect)
